Bathrooms can harbour mould and germs, but you can eliminate these easily without the use of toxic cleaning products. It is easy to feel
that cleaning the bathroom is a chore, although a necessary chore. We have all cleaned bathrooms where you have to hold your breath so you don’t breathe in any toxic fumes. We have all read the instructions to not use chemical cleaning products in a confined space. However, it is factual that most bathrooms would be considered confined spaces! Say goodbye to these chemicals and embrace breathing freely by using a non-toxic alternative.

How to clean the hand basin

Mix together 2 cups of baking soda, 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup each of vinegar and natural liquid dish soap. Put in a spray bottle and use to clean the hand basin and bathtub. You can use toothpaste to clean chrome taps. These alternative solutions can be abrasive, so use sparingly and do not rub too hard.

How to clean the drain

Bathroom drains can get blocked or flow quite slowly due to a build-up of hair and lint. Toxic drain cleaners can actually burn your lungs, skin and eyes. Poisons should never be poured into a drain as they can do damage to the environment. Instead pour 3/4 cup of baking soda followed by 1/2 a cup of vinegar down the drain. Cover the drain with a rag or heavy object. After half an hour, pour boiling water down the drain.

How to clean the toilet

Ditch the bleach and instead mix together a spoonful of baking soda and 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Pour this solution into the toilet once a week and let it sit in the bowl for 30 minutes. To keep the toilet smelling fresh, make your own air freshener. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into a glass jar. Add about 10 drops of essential oil. Shake gently to
mix. Pierce all over the lid so the air freshener will fill the room with its scent.

How to clean mirrors

Mirrors can be cleaned with a lint free or microfibre cloth using a spray mixture of equal parts of vinegar and water.

How to clean the shower

Soap scum and rust stains can be eliminated by making a paste out of baking soda and natural dish soap. Rub the paste with a cloth until the stains have disappeared, then rinse with warm water. An old toothbrush can be used to tackle mildew in tile grout. Vinegar will kill mould, so spray vinegar anywhere mould is growing and leave it to dry. Spray again and wipe clean.

There are many revolutionary new products on the market, such as protective coatings, that can make cleaning glass shower screens a breeze.
